John Clare Cottage, Helpston, Cambs.

The first home of our wonderful poet, John Clare. It was here that he was born and grew up to become one of the most brilliant nature poets and observers of rural life in the 18th/19th century that has ever lived. His poems and prose also describe the stark realities of hardship and poverty, recounting his experiences from a young child to adulthood.

The cottage has a beautiful garden and cafe, and the John Clare Exhibition is open to the public. The cottage is open on Mondays and Thursdays. Please call them for opening hours before you visit as these can vary.

John Clare WeblogFrom Helpston in rural Northamptonshire, John Clare was born in 1793. He is now regarded as the most important poet of the natural world from Britain. He wrote many poems, prose and letters about love, sex, corruption and politics, environmental and social change, poverty and folk life. Even in his 'madness', his talents were not diminished. Ronald Blythe, now retired President of the Clare Society, sees Clare as "... England's most articulate village voice". Clare died, aged 71, in 1864.
